Multi-lingual Gymnastics - The Joys of UTF-8

Joomla 1.5 should make a lot of this moot but it's at RC1 and we had to deliver a multi-lingual 1.0.13 site now. We needed a 11 language payload, including Japanese and Russian apart from the smattering of European languages. Given the variety of character sets, UTF-8 was the only way to handle all the languages within one Joomla instance.

Copying user databases between Joomla sites

usersJoomla stores its user database in various MySQL tables. When migrating sites or promoting sites between different environments it's useful to be able to transfer the user database independently of the rest of the content, structure, etc.

Adding Image Maps when using JCE editor

jceWe consider JCE to be the best WYSISWG editor for Joomla. We came across a recent issue when trying to edit content that required an image map to be associated with a graphic in the content. Basically, JCE was stripping out the whole map when we added it via the HTML editor.

Email Cloaking Image-based Links

Joomla contains an email cloaking plugin, formerly called mambots. This plugin converts emails that you embed in your Joomla content into Javascript that should foil the majority of email harvesting spam bots.

The problem is if you associate an email (mailto) link with an image it all goes pear-shaped and when a user clicks on the image the To: field in their email editor is filled with Javascript!
